How Do I Choose The Right Brush For My Hair?

With so many brush options on the market, choosing the right one for your needs can be tricky, but it’s arguably the easiest step you can make to improve your hair. Investing in a quality brush for your hair type, length and texture can reduce damage, breakage, improve hair health and cut down on styling time. We asked our founder, Garrett, to share a quick guide to brushes.

The Go-To Brush:

Boar bristle: fine to medium

Boar bristle & nylon: medium to thick

Stimulates the scalp, distributes natural oils for soft, shiny hair. Beloved for its versatility, this is in all the pros kit.

Blowout Brush:

*Tip* Choose a round brush size based on the length of your hair.

Boar bristle: fine to medium, for a super soft, bouncy, romantic blowout

Nylon: medium to thick

Once the technique is mastered, a good round brush is a game changer for those who want a professional-looking blowout at-home, volume and natural curls.

Detangling Brush:

Wet brush: fine to medium

Soft, flexible bristles easily glide through hair without creating breakage.

Cushion (also known as a Denman): medium, thick, curly

Wide spaced nylon bristles make easy work of detangling and defining curls. This brush is also good to re-fluff or re-shape dry curls and to blowout sleek bobs.

Tips For Brushing:

- Over-brushing is possible, a good brushing once a day is plenty

- Hair is most vulnerable when wet so take extra care to go slow when detangling; start at the ends and work up to the roots

- Let hair get 70 to 80 percent dry *before* blow drying with or without a brush

- Clean your brushes monthly to get rid of hair and oily buildup
